Around 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located many other vandalized cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests show the fluid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in association with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities said they were trying "to solve the incident" and have asked to the community for tips.
A senior official stated the attack left him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
