The buzz surrounding The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
